Anzis repeats as Iowa High School champion

Author: Hank Anzis

Top seed Matt Anzis successfully repeated as Iowa High School Champion over a field of 13 players January 23rd at the Salvation Army in Marshalltown. Anzis, a Marshalltown junior, defeated Iowa Girls champion Bethany Carson in round 3 and Marshalltown sophomore Jaleb Jay in the final round. 4th place was captured by Chris Johnson of Marshalltown when he pulled off a 500+ point final round upset of Kristian Stephens. Jacob Ulrich (the only player who had to face both Anzis and Carson) of Cedar Rapids and Stephens tied for 5th and 6th place. Pictures can be found on the Iowa Group's chess.com page.

With the victory, Anzis has earned the right to represent Iowa in the Denker Tournament of High School Champions in California this August. Special thanks to the Salvation Army of Marshalltown for hosting the event, and Tim Carson for taking photographs and offering to play rated games with players receiving byes.
